Torrevieja Pink Lagoon

Europe's most famous pink salt lagoon, right next to La Hoya.

The Pink Lagoon is the Torrevieja lagoon, one of the two large salt lagoons of the Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja Natural Park. Its pink colour comes from a microalga (Dunaliella salina) and bacteria living in the hypersaline water; the colour is strongest on hot, sunny days.

From La Hoya it is just a short walk away: many homes in the neighbourhood look out over the lagoon, and the sunsets over the water are one of the area's great attractions. Flamingos can be seen along its shores, as well as the salt mountains of the salt works, which are still in operation.

To enjoy it, follow the paths and viewpoints of the natural park. Swimming in the lagoon is not allowed in order to protect the ecosystem.
